Next Generation Networks (NGN)

During the 80s and 90s, the three themes networks, telecommunications and systems were totally independent and watertight. With the arrival of GPRS (2.5G) in the mid-1990s, an IP network was added to the cellular core network. Consequently, two heterogeneous domains coexist: Packet Switching (PS) for data and Circuit Switching (CS) for voice. Network and telecommunications convergence began and ended in 2010 with the deployment of 4G, the core network of which is full IP (removal of the CS domain). At the same time, from 2010 with the large-scale deployment of Cloudified solutions (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS), system virtualization technology has matured and has even looked into the virtualization of network functions (NFV/SDN) and is no longer limited to traditional operating systems. The 5th Generation of cellular networks (5G) developed within the framework of 3GPP takes advantage of this reliable high-level virtualization, thus allowing convergence of networks, telecommunications and systems. This is the new generation of networks commonly called Softwarized Networks (software). The axes of the NGN team, developed since 2018, are part of this 3GPP roadmap to improve the QoS/QoE performance of flows in a virtualized and therefore more complex network environment. In a 5G network, three broad categories of use cases emerge with different throughput and latency requirements: Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and Bulk Communications. machine type (mMTC). eMBB is offered for data-intensive applications and requires high data rates of several gigabits per second with a moderate latency of a few milliseconds. URLLC supports ultra-reliable, low-latency communications in the order of 1 millisecond. mMTC supports smart cities and logistics applications with high connection density and energy efficiency.
